Arthritis Medications
Category: MusculoskeletalDasequin, Metacam and Previcox are drugs that are used to treat hip dysplasia, arthritis and degenerative joint disease (DJD). While we cannot reverse the course of any of these conditions, we can slow or stop their progression and decrease the associated inflammation and pain.
Dasequin contains glucosamine, low molecular weight chondroitin sulfate, glycosaminoglycans, and Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM). These substances promote the health of articular (joint) cartilage and may prevent progression of DJD. MSM has been shown to help improve the muscle mass around the joint to help ease joint damage. Dasequin is administered twice a day as a dietary supplement and when given in recommended dosages, has no detrimental side effects. Dasequin is given at the label dosage (by weight of the patient) for four to six weeks. If a positive response is noted, the dosage may be decreased after the four to six week loading dose period.
Metacam and Previcox are new non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs that have an action similar to that of aspirin but, are more effective and much safer. Over the counter arthritis medications can cause serious side effects in dogs. All anti-inflammatory drugs can cause reactions such as liver and kidney problems. If your pet does not eat or develops any other adverse signs, discontinue the medication and call the office. In addition, Metacam and Previcox are much more effective than aspirin and other over the counter anti-inflammatory products. They are effective at alleviating pain and inflammation in general and are especially effective for alleviating pain and inflammation resulting from DJD and arthritis. Metacam and Previcox are administered per day with dosage based upon the weight of the patient. The Previcox tablets are chewable, so it is necessary to prevent overdose by storing medication out of the pet’s reach.
Dogs with hip dysplasia, arthritis or DJD are initially treated with both Dasequin and Metacam or Previcox. Ideally, the dosage of Dasequin is decreased after four to six weeks and Metacam or Previcox is discontinued or given only on “bad days”. If you have any questions, be sure to call your Veterinarian.
